Absorbing History

Other than the incredible food and drinks, Eberly encompasses rich history within, even with its opening date of October 2016.

‘Eberly’ comes from an Austin innkeeper and local hero named Angelina Eberly who stood up to President Sam Houston and his team in 1842 during Texas Archive War. She fired a 6lb cannonball into the General Land Office Building to preserve our capital of Texas. Her statue can be found on Congress Avenue between W 6th and 7th streets.

There is a bar in the rear (pictured above), made originally in 1866 of Mahogany shipped from Greenwich Village in New York City and eventually to here, Austin. While in NYC, this bar was the hangout for several notable artists, abstract expressionists, beat writers and folk musicians, such as few little known people like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Jackson Pollock!

A little known fact, just past the beautiful bar, there is a secret room in the back with another bar. The bar has a mirror you can see out of but no one can see inside, it’s a lot like a speakeasy because the door to the room is labeled as “Office.”

 

Adult Beverages

First off and most importantly, if you sit at either of the bars, ask for Matt Browning, he’ll either take care of you or he’ll make sure you’re taken care of.

Now regarding alcoholic beverages, Eberly has a lot to offer. My favorite drink made there is Smokin’ Barrel which includes Old Forester Bourbon, Dickel Rye, Ardbeg and maple simple… it’s INCREDIBLE. SMOKEY. DELICIOUS. Eberly also makes one of the best Old Fashioneds I’ve ever tasted. If whiskey/bourbon isn’t your thing, I know that the Bluebird is very popular with the clear liquor fans. The Bluebird includes vodka, pomegranate, lemon and crême de violette (a low proof liqueur made from the violet flower).

Starters Are More Than Just That

The appetizers are truly the stars of Eberly’s menu, sometimes I will just order starters for our entire meal. I recommend starting off with the Beef Tartare ($24) that includes filet mignon tartare, bone marrow, chili giardiniera, buttermilk fried shallots, and the best bread I’ve ever experienced: grilled sourdough. Additionally, I would recommend their Charcuterie Board ($26) which is always a variety of cheeses, cured meats, accoutrements and crackers. Their Poke Cold Fare ($18) is delicious but a bit pricey. Other delicious and unique appetizers include: Cornmeal Hushpuppies ($16) that incorporates jumbo lump crab, jambalaya, andouille and parmesan, Fresh Oysters ($22 half dozen/$38 full dozen), and Crispy Crushed Potatoes ($10) as a side.

Main Entree Plates

As I recommended before, the starters are typically the way to go, especially if you have a large group of people at Eberly for dinner. However, if you’re looking for just an entree, give their Pan Roasted Salmon ($28*) a try. The salmon plate includes brussel sprouts, hazelnuts, pickled mushrooms, celery root puree, and a chili gastrique which all together is so delicious. The other entree that I’ve purchased was their freshly made from scratch pasta (gluten free made out of buckwheat) with a side of chicken. I can confidently say I have never had pasta quite like this, there was no way that I would have figured out it was gluten free if I wasn’t previously informed.


Important Notes

  • There isn’t parking, it’s valet parking only, so make sure you have a few bills on you for the valet drivers.

  • The dress code is cocktail attire (semi-formal).

  • The Cedar Tavern has a different menu than the main restaurant. Similar items but some additional, less expensive options.

  • When making a reservation, if it’s a special occasion, let them know, they might print off a couple of menus for you with your special occasion on the front of it.

  • Speaking of menus, the menus change a lot, so you might want to look at their menu online before making the trip.

  • Lastly, there’s a beautiful upstairs enclosed rooftop bar/space that has a small, tiny view of downtown Austin.
