Austin's Winter Storm Nightmare | Water + What's Open
Well, never thought this would be a thing I would be writing about…
Snow, in Austin, has become devastating. Businesses are closed, roads are icy, and most importantly, over 300,000 people are without power.
Since I have (knock on wood) power, heat, and water… I want to be able to help provide some answers and solutions to those who are not as fortunate.
Please, call ahead before heading out to any of the establishments to ensure that they’re still open.

Some of the important questions:
Where is the water? See below for my list of places offering water for free, just bring your own container.
Grocery stores open? Yes, several are open during the day, check the list I included below.
Restaurants open? Not many, I’ll include a list below.
Can I leave my house? If you haven’t driven on snow or ice, I would avoid driving. Additionally, if you don’t have 4x4, getting stuck is a huge possibility, and keeping more cars off the streets is important. If you get stuck, cell reception has been spotty around the Austin area, so getting help might also be difficult.
When will this end? I’m not a meteorologist but keeping an eye on the weather, it looks like Friday.
What roads should I avoid? Like I said before, don’t drive if you don’t have to. BUT if you feel capable, or if you need to get to a shelter… use this link in order to figure out road closures or icy roads.

POWER OUTAGES
Let’s talk about the biggest issue… the power outages. This is the most recent update I’ve seen Austin Energy give with an explanation:
“While @ERCOT_ISO says conditions are improving, we want customers to know this a dynamic situation + conditions are changing throughout the day. Customers should be prepared to not have power through Tuesday night and possibly longer. Why are we not rotating outages? All circuits that do not have pre-identified critical load are a part of the emergency outages. We can't drop any additional load on other circuits to go and rotate through…”
It blows my mind that we are even in this position right now and to those struggling without power, I am so incredibly sorry. Please reach out to loved ones for help because as a community, we have to band together! If you have power and water, please conserve as much as possible so we can
