Pie, ‘za, slice, pizza, however you slice it, we have a lot of options here in Austin, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I had my favorites around town.

NYC/NJ Style 🍕

“Nationally, New York City is known for a pizza style that resembles an oversized version of Neapolitan pizza: thin, flexible slices—often folded in half while eaten—that are light on cheese and other toppings.”

These are my favorite types of pies, especially the ones from the city, NYC, that is.
So much that I have a slice tattooed on my arm with little apples in place of the pepperonis.

Pedroso’s has many different types of pizzas but the one that stands out to me is their New York Style pie. I prefer it with their fresh mozzarella and small pepperonis.

an atx FYI: they sell slices during lunch so if you miss NYC slices, I suggest hitting them up

From Westlake to East Austin, Sammataro has made quite the name for itself. Sir Sammataro, Issac Flores, worked to recreate his fave pies from Brooklyn during the pandemic by building a pizza oven in his own backyard. He was clearly successful because now in addition to his food truck, he has taken over the 40 North space and opened Sammataro East.

an atx FYI: I prefer their cold cut sandwiches over their pizzas and when their pizza wait is over an hour… the subs are usually ready in 15mins; it’s wonderful. Also, the antipasto is dope.

Neapolitan pizza

🍕

Neapolitan pizza 🍕

“…A type of pizza that originated in Naples, Italy. This style of pizza is prepared with simple and fresh ingredients: a basic dough, raw tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil. No fancy toppings are allowed!

One of its defining characteristics is that there is often more sauce than cheese. This leaves the middle of the pie wet or soggy and not conducive to being served by the slice. Because of this, Neapolitan pizzas are generally pretty small (about 10 to 12 inches), making them closer to the size of a personal pizza.

Neapolitan pizzas are also cooked at very high temperatures (800 F to 900 F) for no more than 90 seconds.” (SpruceEats)

Pizza coming from a couple of native New Yorkers, Show Me Pizza has quickly made a mark on the ‘za scene. Opening up in the original Torchy’s Tacos location in 2021, they’ve been very innovative from the start. Show Me literally means show me… as they live stream their oven on Twitch every single day.

I first experienced pieous when they were out in the west and was absolutely blown away by the pie and their meat plate (don’t forget to try their pastrami as well). This family-owned restaurant makes their wood-fired Neopolitan pizzas from scratch on sourdough crust.

an atx FYI: Pieous still has their dining room closed due to some medical issues with the owner’s family. But they offer great reheating instructions via video to help you after picking it up. They mention they’ll reopen in the future, but let’s give them some grace, given what they’re going through.

This isn’t a local Austin spot, coming originally from Dallas BUT since we don’t have anything else like it, I wanted to give it a highlight. Delucca is a Brazilian-type pizza spot where you pay one price for all-you-can-eat pizza. The servers serve 14 different types of dinner pizzas and four dessert pizzas.
